As part of its programmes to promote economic empowerment in the community, Zakat Kenya Foundation has disbursed Sh3.8 million in empowerment funds.

A total of 38 beneficiaries in Nairobi and surrounding areas have benefited from the programme.

The funds, which are part of Zakat payments, are intended to serve as start-up capital to help recipients launch small businesses and promote their sustainability.

According to Zakat Kenya CEO Munawwar Ismail, 145 applications were received, but many remain pending due to a lack of Zakat and Sadaqah funds.

“It is our desire to assist more people, but we are limited due to insufficient funds,” he said, appealing to those eligible to pay Zakat to fulfil their obligation through Zakat Kenya.

Speaking during the disbursement event on April 25, Jamia Mosque Executive Officer Said Abdallah commended Zakat Kenya Foundation for its role in promoting socio-economic progress in the community.

“It is a noble initiative that has helped many people come out of poverty and achieve self-sustainability. Through Zakat and Sadaqah, Zakat Kenya has empowered hundreds of individuals, helping them start income-generating projects that have uplifted their livelihoods.”

Zakat Kenya has also supported students through education bursaries, provided medical assistance to the sick, and implemented general welfare programmes, including support for the less fortunate.

Applications for support are carefully vetted to ensure legitimacy, while funds are distributed in accordance with Shariah guidelines, primarily targeting the poor and needy.

Selected beneficiaries undergo a ten-day course in financial management, business ethics, and entrepreneurship to facilitate the proper utilisation of the funds.

Zakat payments can be channelled through M-Pesa Paybill number 153088, Account: Zakat. Sadaqah contributions can be made through Paybill number 600765, Account: Sadaqah.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a sacred obligation with deep spiritual significance and powerful social impact. Through Zakat, Muslims purify their wealth and support those in need, strengthening both individual faith and the wider community.
