Wajir County Referral Hospital is undergoing a major Sh500 million ultramodern expansion aimed at transforming the facility into the region’s first Level 5 specialized medical hub.

The ambitious project is expected to significantly improve access to advanced healthcare services in northern Kenya while reducing costly patient referrals to hospitals in Garissa and Nairobi.

The modernization project is being implemented through a collaboration between the National and County governments as part of ongoing efforts to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve healthcare delivery in underserved regions.

Among the key upgrades is the construction of a multi-storey Accident and Emergency (A&E) wing equipped with modern triage units, isolation rooms, and rapid-response laboratories. The facility is designed to provide comprehensive emergency and critical care services, significantly boosting emergency response capacity within Wajir County and neighbouring regions.

The hospital is also being equipped with a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 12-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU), alongside three state-of-the-art operating theatres fitted with advanced systems, including laminar flow technology to enhance surgical safety and infection control.

On the first floor, the facility features a 48-bed inpatient ward equally divided between male and female patients, as well as four private amenity rooms aimed at improving patient comfort and specialized care services.

Additionally, the rooftop hosts an industrial water purification plant capable of producing 2,000 litres of medical-grade water per hour to support the hospital’s growing operational demands.

Originally constructed in 1944 by Italian prisoners of war during World War II, Wajir County Referral Hospital has served the region for more than eight decades. The ongoing modernization effectively rebuilds and expands the historic facility’s colonial-era foundation into a modern healthcare institution capable of serving the evolving medical needs of the region.
