The 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium is another shining symbol of the ongoing transformation in Kenya’s sports sector.

The government, through inter-agency coordination, is undertaking a comprehensive facelift of the stadium in preparation for the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1—the first time a national event will be held in Northern Kenya.

Since construction works began in February, significant progress has been made, with the project now at 70 percent completion and on track for operational readiness by the end of May.

While announcing the project, President William Ruto revealed that the government had allocated Sh900 million for the stadium’s construction, noting that it is intended to boost sports development and stimulate the local economy.

The stadium features a standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, a VIP pavilion, changing rooms, and other essential amenities that define a modern sports facility.

It is expected to significantly improve sports infrastructure in the region by providing modern facilities that will nurture talent and support various community programmes.

Speaking during an inspection tour last week, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo commended the coordinated efforts by different government agencies to fast-track the project.

“This effort is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade that includes the development of key auxiliary facilities such as access roads, the County Commissioner’s residence, as well as improved water and electricity connectivity. These enhancements will ensure the area is fully prepared to host the national event while delivering lasting benefits to the local community,” he said.

He added that the decision to host the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir is part of the national government’s policy of rotating major national events across regions to promote inclusivity.

“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a government, we are committed to taking national celebrations to all parts of the country so that every region feels included in our national journey and development,” he said.

Also present during the inspection was the host Governor, Ahmed Abdullahi, alongside national and county government officials. The leaders emphasized the importance of completing the project on time, noting that the stadium will serve as the centerpiece of the celebrations, hosting thousands of attendees, including dignitaries and members of the public.

As an investment aimed at accelerating the growth of sports in Wajir and beyond, the stadium will play a critical role in identifying, nurturing, and developing diverse talent in the county and the wider Northern region. It is also expected to generate lasting economic benefits for local communities, including employment opportunities, improved public amenities, and increased national visibility for the region.
