Prof. Badamana is new chair of Majlis Ulamaa Jamia

Renowned Islamic scholar and academic Prof. Muhammad Salim Badamana has been appointed the new chairman of the Majlis Ulamaa Jamia, the council of Muslim scholars of Jamia Mosque, Nairobi.

Prof. Badamana succeeds the late Sheikh Fathudin Thangal, who served as chairman for many years before his passing in Kerala, India last year. His appointment marks a new chapter for the scholarly body, which plays a key role in providing religious guidance to Jamia Mosque Committee and other matters affecting the Muslim community.

Prior to his new role, Prof. Badamana served as deputy chairman of the Majlis Ulamaa Jamia.

Widely respected in both religious and academic circles, Prof. Badamana currently serves as chairman of the Pwani University Council. He previously headed the Department of Animal Production at the University of Nairobi.

Beyond academia, Prof. Badamana is well known to many Muslims across East Africa for his role in Islamic education through the media. During the 1990s, he hosted the popular Kiswahili question-and-answer programme Uliza Ujibiwe on the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), a show that attracted a large audience and provided guidance on religious and social issues affecting Muslim communities across the region.

The newly constituted Majlis Ulamaa Jamia brings together a diverse team of distinguished scholars from different parts of the country. Members of the council include Dr. Islam Muhammad Salim, a prominent scholar based in Mombasa, Sheikh Ahmad Uthman, Imam of Landhies Mosque, Dr. Adam Khamis Mwaburi, an academic and researcher from Mombasa and Dr. Ismail Hassan, who serves as the Director of Direct Aid (Africa Muslim Agency.

Others are Sheikh Abdulrahman Ishaq, Imam of Parklands Mosque, Qari Abdul Razzaq Faquir Mohammad, Chief Executive Officer of Star of Hope in Isiolo and Sheikh Ahmad Noor, a respected Nairobi-based scholar.

Acting Chief Kadhi Sheikh Sukyan Hassan Omar also serves on the council as an ex-officio member.

The council was inaugurated on Monday June 15 and over the next three years, the team will be tasked with steering the council's scholarly agenda, offering guidance on religious affairs, and helping the Muslim community navigate contemporary social, educational and spiritual challenges through informed Islamic scholarship.
