Kenyans can now download and print birth certificates online without the need to visit Huduma Centres or Civil Registration offices, in a move expected to significantly improve access to essential government services.

The new development is set to reduce the time and the bureaucracy associated with obtaining birth certificates, offering citizens a more convenient and efficient service delivery experience.

Announcing the milestone, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, said the initiative forms part of the government's efforts to enhance accessibility to key public services across the country.

Murkomen noted that the digitisation of birth certificate issuance represents a major step towards bringing government services closer to citizens, regardless of their geographical location.

He said Kenyans will now be able to access the service more efficiently through online platforms, eliminating the need for physical visits to government offices to collect the documents.

The move follows concerns and recommendations raised by members of the public during the Jukwaa la Usalama public engagement forums, where access to civil registration documents emerged as a key issue.

“Kenyans can now download and print birth certificates online, a significant step towards improving accessibility and reducing the time required to obtain essential documents,” Murkomen said in a statement.

The Cabinet Secretary made the announcement on Monday June 22, during a meeting with senior officials from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, led by Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, at Nyayo House.

Murkomen also highlighted ongoing efforts to decentralise critical government services, including plans to expand passport application and collection centres to additional counties. He revealed that Kilifi County is among the regions expected to benefit from the next phase of the rollout.

“Among the key milestones is the continued decentralisation of passport issuance services, with plans underway to expand physical passport application and collection centres to Kilifi County, in addition to the counties already served,” he said.

Previously, while applications for birth certificates could be initiated online through the eCitizen platform, applicants were still required to visit Civil Registration offices or Huduma Centres to collect the documents.

Under the new arrangement, citizens can complete the process digitally through the Civil Registration Services section of the eCitizen portal, download and print the document from anywhere in the country without visiting government offices.

The eCitizen platform is Kenya’s official digital portal that allows citizens, residents, and visitors to access government services online.
