Over 600 youth sign up for Kamukunji vocational skills programme

The programme offers 15 short trade and technical courses that will run for 3–6 months, equipping trainees with specialized skills to help them become self-employed

Hundreds of young people turned up on Monday, December 15, 2025, to register for a range of vocational training skills at the Kamukunji Youth Empowerment Programme drive at the California ICT Centre.

The programme offers 15 short trade and technical courses that will run for 3–6 months, equipping trainees with specialized skills to help them become self-employed and give them a head start in entering the job market.

Organised by Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan, the programme will see the first batch of trainees begin their courses in January 2026.

“I am pleased that the Kamukunji youth have responded in large numbers. Today’s exercise was ran smoothly and efficiently, in an open and transparent manner, and no deserving applicant will be left out,” he said.

“The courses focus on the skills young people are most eager to learn. Participants will receive certifications after completing training programs lasting between three and six months,” the MP added.

Over 600 youth turned up for the registration exercise, which closes on Tuesday, December 16. The initiative targets young people aged 35 and below residing in Pumwani, Eastleigh North, Eastleigh South, Airbase, and California wards.

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), certified courses will equip participants with practical, hands-on technical and entrepreneurial skills, and upon successful completion, participants will be awarded certification.

In addition, beneficiaries will receive start-up capital and toolkits to help them launch their own businesses, thereby enhancing their economic prospects.

The vocational courses on offer include welding and fabrication, fashion design, electrical installation, plumbing, driving, videography and photography (content creation), pastry, catering, among others.

Applicants are required to present their national identification cards and two passport-sized photographs during registration.
