Legendary Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) radio presenter Amina Fakii passed away on Sunday, December 21, at the age of 83 years.

She was buried the same day at the Bulbul Muslim cemetery in Ngong, Kajiado County, after Asr (late afternoon) prayers.

In her radio career, which began in 1963, she earned herself a name as among the most recognisable voices on the then Voice of Kenya (VOK) now Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) radio.

At a time when radio was the primary source of information, her distinctive voice and on air engagements, made her a household name among listeners across the country and East Africa.

During her career spanning decades, she inspired generations, and her work helped shape Kenya’s broadcast landscape, earning her commendations from generations of listeners and viewers.

She distinguished herself through discipline and command of the Swahili language, for which she insisted on accuracy, ethics, and respect .

“Amina was excellence without noise. She prepared thoroughly, spoke deliberately, and never took the audience for granted. Working alongside her made you want to be better,” said her former colleague Khadija Ali.

In Nairobi’s California estate where she lived, she was known for her longstanding commitment to charitable initiatives and involvement in community activities.

Relatives describe her as a “steady source of comfort and guidance,” recalling countless evenings when her home became a refuge for those in need.

May Allah grant her His boundless mercy, forgive her shortcomings, and admit her into the highest abode, Jannatul Firdaus.

Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un; Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall all return.
