Lamu Riyadha mosque offers free knee replacement surgery

The Lamu-based Riyadha Mosque and Islamic Centre is conducting a medical camp where patients with knee challenges will be provided a free replacement through surgery.

The surgery is among various health services offered during a free medical camp organized by the mosque through its Health and Welfare department.

“The patient must have all the required documentation and a full report from the doctor,” said a communique issued by Alwy Ahmed Badawy who is in charge of partnership and mobilization at the mosque.

Patients who require the medical procedure can obtain further information on the surgery from Abubakar Badawy through 0722 807 598 or Abdul Kaunda at 0722 477 598.

Knee and hip revision surgeries are specialized procedures performed when a previous joint replacement wears out, loosens, or causes complications. The surgery replaces parts of injured or worn-out knee joints and aims at restoring joint function, reduce pain, and improve mobility.

During the surgery, damaged bone and cartilage are replaced with parts made of metal and plastic.

Experts warn that the number of people needing knee replacement surgery is likely to increase as more people live longer into old age. They recommend that people keep a healthy weight, exercise often, and eat healthily to help prevent the need for surgery.

The medical camp is part of the annual activities by the mosque to support community needs.

Since its inception in 2002, the annual free medical camp has provided medical and surgical services to thousands of people in Lamu and surrounding ares who are not in a position to access specialized treatment or cannot afford the cost.
