The Kisumu Jamia Mosque will open its doors to people of other faiths in a programme aimed at fostering understanding between Muslims and people of other faiths.

The Open Day programme is planned for Sunday, September 28, and it will provide an opportunity for people of other faiths to visit the mosque, ask questions about Islam, and gain insights into Islamic belief and practices.

“Visitors will be provided with guided tours of the mosque, have the opportunity to observe congregational prayers, attend informational sessions, as well as interact with scholars in a question and answer session,” said the Imam Sheikh FaraJ Khamis.

He emphasized that in a world filled with misinformation about Islam, it is imperative that people receive authentic information—not from the media or other unauthentic sources, but directly from Muslims. “Some people have never seen inside a mosque and believe that inside are idols and jinns. We need to dispel such misconceptions and provide an opportunity for people to gain a deeper understanding of Islam,” the Sheikh added.

Sheikh Faraj appealed to people of other faiths to take the opportunity to visit the mosque saying that this will also help in fostering social cohesion.“This event is open to everyone. Come along with your families, friends, and colleagues. Let us build bridges of understanding together,” he said.

It will be the first time for the mosque in the Lakeside city to open its doors to non-Muslims.

Nairobi’s Jamia mosque and Park Road mosque in Nairobi are among mosques that have had such programmes drawing in hundreds of people to experience and learn about Islamic beliefs and practices.

Around the world, mosques are increasingly organizing Open Day programmes which aim at fostering a better understanding of Islam, encouraging interfaith dialogue, and building bridges of understanding between different communities. Moreover, the programme serves as a platform for dispelling misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, nurturing a spirit of tolerance, and providing an opportunity to embrace shared values.
