AG appoints new team for Wakf selection panel

The Attorney General Dorcas Oduor has issued a Gazette notice appointing members of a select panel tasked with appointing Commissioners to the Wakf Commission.

The notice of appointment was published in the Kenya Gazette dated December 15, 2025.

The mandate of the panel includes identifying, evaluating, and recommending qualified candidates for the appointment as members of the Wakf Commission in accordance with Wakf Act 2022.

Members of the five-member team are Mohammed Alawi Hassun, who is the chairman, Sheikh Hassan Ali Amin, Sumaya Hassan, Shoaib Vayani and Hannan Hassan El Kathir.

The chairman is a former Commissioner with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) while Sheikh Hassan is the Nairobi chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) and Sumaya Hassan served in the previous committee, and she is the CEO of Takaful Insurance of Africa.

Also in the panel is Shoaib Vayani, the Deputy Secretary General at National Olympic Committee of Kenyaand Hannan Hassan El-Kathir is a founder of Nairobi law firm, HHK law advocates.

The appointment follows a series of consultative meetings between Attorney General Dorcas Oduor and the Muslim leadership aimed at charting the way forward after the disbandment of the previous select panel.

The previous selection panel was revoked through a gazette notice dated October 24, 2025. Its dissolution had raised concerns about further delays in appointing new Commissioners, prompting consultations between the Attorney General and leaders from Jamia Mosque Committee, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF) and the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK).

Under the Waqf Act 2022, the selection committee is mandated to oversee the nomination process for Waqf Commissioners, ensuring that qualified individuals are appointed to guide and oversee the Commission’s operations.
