Mental health diseases are among the pressing medical challenges of the present generation and Muslims should be at the forefront in addressing this problem.

The remarks were made by the deputy Imam of Park Road Mosque Sheikh Ramadhan Mwangi who emphasized awareness measures to address the problem, which he said was on a worrying increase.

Addressing the congregation at the mosque during Friday prayers recently, the Imam said rising incidences of suicides, depression, stress-related problems, and other mental issues should reinvigorate the ummah in addressing these challenges. “For those having mental challenges, suicide or leaving a life in despair is not a solution. Just like other diseases, mental health can be treated, and it is important to seek professional help from mental health practitioners,” he said.

Sheikh Ramadhan said it is unfortunate that some people view mental health issues with stigma, where those who are suffering are looked at with shame and hidden from society. “This often leaves those who are struggling feeling isolated. Some are physically shackled or confined to keep them away from people,” he added.

The Imam further stressed that the Quran and the Sunnah, the teachings of the noble Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, are replete with teachings that also help in addressing mental health problems. “Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and learning from the example of the Prophet and his companions is among the therapeutic ways of addressing mental illness,” he said.

He spoke on the need to increase awareness of mental health saying that a myriad of challenges of family, social and work life are fueling mental health diseases. “Even children are now being affected by mental health. This is a serious matter that needs to be urgently attended to,” he said.
