Wakf Selection Panel engages Kisumu Muslim Association
The panel briefed the Association on its mandate to identify and recommend commissioners who will oversee the operations of the Wakf Commission.

As part of its stakeholder engagement programme with Muslim organizations, the selection panel of the Wakf Commission on Wednesday April 29, paid a courtesy call to the Kisumu Muslim Association (KMA).
Led by its chairman, Mohamed Alawi, the panel briefed the Association on its mandate to identify and recommend commissioners who will oversee the operations of the Wakf Commission.
Alawi said the panel is committed to upholding integrity in the recruitment process by ensuring that qualified and competent individuals are selected to support the operationalization of the Commission.
He also commended the Kisumu Muslim Association for its effective utilization of waqf properties for the benefit of the Muslim community, noting that its efforts should serve as a model for other organizations.
In his remarks, KMA Chairman Sheikh Musa Ismail expressed support for the panel, pledging the Association’s cooperation in achieving the goal of establishing a fully functional commission to regulate and manage waqf properties.
The selection panel is mandated under the Waqf Act (Cap. 109) to nominate suitable candidates for appointment as commissioners responsible for managing Islamic charitable assets across Kenya.
Under the Waqf Act 2022, the Commission’s mandate has been expanded to oversee endowment properties nationwide, unlike under the previous law, where its jurisdiction was largely limited to coastal regions.
The Commission’s responsibilities include the registration, auditing, and protection of waqf assets—properties and funds dedicated to religious, educational, healthcare, and community welfare purposes.
The selection panel chairman was accompanied by Vice Chairperson Sumayyah Hassan Athman and member Hannan Hassan El-Kathiri.
