Treasury grants tax waiver on dates imports ahead of Ramadhan
Unlike previous years, the waiver has been granted well in advance of Ramadhan.

The National Treasury has granted a waiver allowing the tax-free importation of dates into the country ahead of the forthcoming month of Ramadhan.
Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, John Mbadi, said the waiver will apply to dates imported for use during Ramadhan and will be effective from February 12 to March 20, 2026. The decision follows a request by the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Chairman, Hassan Ole Naado, who sought an exemption from all taxes on dates imported for consumption during the holy month. Ramadhan is expected to begin around February 18, 2026, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon.
In a letter dated January 16, 2026, and addressed to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General Humphrey W. Mulongo, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed the exemption from the Import Declaration Fee (IDF) and the Railway Development Levy (RDL) for dates imported specifically for Ramadan use.
To facilitate smooth customs clearance, SUPKEM will provide the Commissioner General with the necessary documentation to support the importation process.
Unlike previous years, the waiver has been granted well in advance of Ramadhan. The need for early importation and availability of dates was emphasized during deliberations at a consultative meeting on drought mitigation organized by the Office of the Deputy President last month.
Welcoming the decision, the SUPKEM Chairman praised the government for the timely intervention.
“This generous initiative not only supports those in need but also reflects the spirit of giving and compassion that Ramadhan inspires. Dates hold a special place in our faith, particularly as they are traditionally used to break the fast,” he said.
