Obituary: Mama Mariam-The Visionary behind KMWWA’s legacy of empowerment
Her remarkable journey in community service and educational empowerment began in 1985 through the adult education movement

The Kenya Muslim Women Welfare Association (KMWWA) is mourning the loss of its founder and chairperson, Maryam Mohammed Abdo, who passed on over the weekend at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy dedicated to the empowerment and upliftment of Muslim women and communities across Kenya.
Fondly known as Mama Mariam, she was a visionary leader, compassionate mentor, and devoted servant of the community whose life was dedicated to uplifting Muslim women and empowering vulnerable members of society through education, spiritual guidance, and economic empowerment. Despite her advanced age, she remained steadfast in her mission, tirelessly working to improve the lives of women and girls across Kenya.
She breathed her last on Saturday, May 16, 2026, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital. Funeral prayers were held on Sunday, May 17, at Masjid Noor in Nairobi’s South C estate followed by burial at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery.
Her remarkable journey in community service and educational empowerment began in 1985 through the adult education movement. Together with other committed women, she co-founded the Kenya Adult Learners Association (KALA), an organization established to champion girl-child education and promote literacy among youth and adults. Owing to her exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication, she was first elected the Nairobi chairperson before later ascending to the position of national chairperson in 1995.
After years of distinguished service at KALA, Mama Mariam turned her focus toward addressing the plight of Muslim women facing poverty and social exclusion. Deeply disturbed by the sight of women begging outside mosques, she resolved to create sustainable solutions that would restore dignity, independence, and hope. This noble vision led to the establishment of the Kenya Muslim Women Welfare Association (KMWWA) in 2005.
In a selfless act of commitment, she transformed her servants’ quarters in South C, Nairobi, into a center for learning and empowerment for newly reverted Muslim women. The center became a sanctuary of knowledge and opportunity, offering Islamic education, basic literacy, and vocational skills training to women and girls seeking a better future.
Under her visionary leadership, KMWWA grew into a respected grassroots organization dedicated to empowering Muslim women, promoting self-reliance, and fostering community development. The association spearheaded numerous civic, educational, and outreach initiatives, particularly supporting reverts to Islam and helping them integrate meaningfully into society.
Mama Mariam championed programs in vocational training, entrepreneurship, and economic advocacy aimed at reducing poverty and enabling women to become self-sufficient.
She has been the brains behind the establishment of Masjid Khadija bint Khuwaylid and Islamic Centre, which is currently under construction in Yatta, Machakos County.
The proposed multi-purpose educational and empowerment complex — the proposed multi purpose-built educational and empowerment—the first of its kind in Kenya built by women for women, will provide structured Islamic education (from basic to high school madrasah levels), providing vocational skills training, spiritual guidance, and a safe boarding facility for over 600 direct beneficiaries, including young girls and adult women.
It is envisioned to equip beneficiaries, mainly reverts with practical skills such as business management, tailoring, farming, and teaching, enabling them to achieve economic independence and dignity.
Its completion will remain her enduring legacy in the provision of knowledge, social and economic empowerment.
Mama Mariam will be remembered as a woman of faith, resilience, wisdom, and extraordinary compassion. Her unwavering dedication to service will continue to transform lives and inspire generations of women to pursue knowledge, self-reliance, and spiritual growth.
May Almighty Allah forgive her shortcomings, shower her with His infinite mercy, and grant her the highest abode in Jannatul Firdaws.
