A new panel to select Commissioners for the Wakf Commission is expected to be established by next week. This follows a consultative meeting between Attorney General Dorcas Oduor and the Muslim leadership aimed at charting the way forward after the disbandment of the previous committee.

The five-member selection panel was revoked through a gazette notice dated October 24, 2025. Its dissolution had raised concerns about further delays in appointing new Commissioners, prompting Monday’s meeting between the Attorney General and key Muslim leaders.

As part of the agreed roadmap, major Muslim organisations—including the National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), Jamia Mosque Committee, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), and the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK)—will each nominate two candidates. From these, five individuals will be appointed to form the new selection panel.

Attorney General Oduor affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the new panel and ensuring that it completes its work within its six-month mandate. “We are committed to ensuring that the selection committee fulfills its mandate as we look forward to having competent people on the Commission,” she said.

Speaking at the meeting held on Monday, November 17, at the Attorney General’s office, NAMLEF chairman Abdullahi Abdi stressed the community’s desire to see the process concluded swiftly so that the Commission can begin its work under the new Wakf Act. “The delays have caused concerns among Muslims around the country, but we are optimistic that the ball will now roll forward to the culmination of this process,” he said.

Jamia Mosque vice chairman, Prof. Abdullatif Essajee, noted that the meeting had laid the foundation for strengthened collaboration between the Attorney General’s office and the Muslim community. “We appreciate the commitment given by the Attorney General, and it is our expectation that we will work closely together in addressing mutual issues with the community,” he said.

Under the Waqf Act 2022, the selection committee is mandated to oversee the nomination process for Waqf Commissioners, ensuring that qualified individuals are appointed to guide and oversee the Commission’s operations.

Among those present at the meeting were SUPKEM vice chairman Sheikh Muhdhar Khitamy, Jamia Mosque Executive Officer Said Abdallah, Muhammad Sultan representing CIPK, and the CEO of the Wakf Commission, Dr. Ibrahim Bulushi.
