The National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF) has launched a fundraising initiative to support the people of Sudan who are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of people in the North African country have been killed and displaced in a conflict that has pitted the Sudanese government and the rebel forces. Entire families have been torn apart by the conflict, starvation and disease are on the rise as cities lie in ruins and humanitarian access remains restricted.

What began as a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in 2023 has turned the country into one of Africa’s worst humanitarian crisis with civilians bearing the brunt of unspeakable violence.

More than 150,000 people have died in the conflict across the country, and about 12 million have fled their homes in what the United Nations has called the world's largest humanitarian crisis.

Famine has already been confirmed in numerous areas, while more than 24 million are classed as acutely food insecure.

“In the spirit of solidarity and compassion, NAMLEF is mobilizing support for our brothers and sisters in Sudan. We stand firmly with the people of Sudan, and we cannot remain silent as another tragedy unfolds within our neighbourhoods,” said a statement from NAMLEF.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, can help save lives,” the statement further added.

During the tree planting exercise at Uhuru Park yesterday, November 3, Sheikh Abu Najma called on Kenyans to also extend a hand of help to people of Sudan, who were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

“We should not forget about our brothers and sisters in Sudan; they are going through an unimaginable humanitarian tragedy,” he said.

During peace times, Sheikh Abu Najma said, Sudan was among the countries that were at the forefront in supporting Kenyans, especially in the sphere of education. “Thousands of Kenyans have benefitted from scholarships granted by the government of Sudan in the fields of Islamic studies, medicine, engineering, nursing and other courses of study,” he said, while urging concerted efforts to support the people of Sudan.
