Move to higher grounds to avoid floods , Garissa and Tana River residents adviced
The water levels along the Tana River are expected to continue increasing potentially triggering early flooding in low-lying areas which include Garissa, Hola, and Garsen,

Residents of Garissa and Tana River counties have been advised to relocate to higher ground following a government warning about potential flooding caused by rising water levels in major dams along the Tana River cascade.
In a statement, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed that Masinga Dam reached full capacity necessitating controlled water releases to prevent structural damage. He noted that Kamburu, Gitaru, and Kindaruma dams are also being carefully managed to maintain safe operating levels.
“These measures are critical to safeguard the structural integrity of the dams, especially given the substantial inflows from the Aberdares and Mount Kenya regions,” he said.
Mwaura explained that heavy inflows from the Aberdares and Mount Kenya regions have put significant pressure on the dams, with Kiambere Dam expected to start spilling within the next five days. He emphasized that the measures are essential to protect the integrity of the dam infrastructure under the current conditions.
The water levels along the Tana River are expected to continue increasing through May 1, potentially triggering early flooding in low-lying areas which include Garissa, Hola, and Garsen, with floodwaters extending into surrounding plains and delta regions.
“Residents in low-lying areas, especially in Garissa and Tana River counties, are strongly urged to move to higher ground immediately to protect lives and property,” said Mwaura.
Mwaura added that the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC), together with other agencies, is closely monitoring developments and coordinating response efforts. With heavy rains expected to persist across parts of the country, the public has been urged to stay alert, follow official guidance, report emergencies promptly, and cooperate with authorities as the situation evolves.
Local authorities and community leaders have also been tasked with spreading awareness and facilitating evacuations where necessary.
Mwaura said heavy rains are expected to persist in various parts of the country and urged the public to remain vigilant.
“The government will maintain continuous surveillance and provide timely updates. We call upon all citizens to strictly adhere to official advisories, report emergencies promptly to the nearest disaster management offices and cooperate fully with authorities,” he said.
