Live by the teachings of the Qur’an to promote peace, Noordin Haji says
He emphasized the importance of not only memorizing the Qur’an but also understanding and implementing its teachings

As the holy month of Ramadhan approaches, Muslims have been urged to strengthen their moral discipline and deepen their understanding of Islamic teachings as embodied in the Qur’an and the Sunnah — the traditions of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
The call was made by Noordin Haji, Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), during the closing ceremony of the annual Qur’an competition at Ibn Abbas Madrasa in Masalani, Garissa County. The event was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
In his address, Noordin emphasized the importance of not only memorizing the Qur’an but also understanding and implementing its teachings. He noted that Qur’anic guidance remains a lasting solution to many of the challenges facing contemporary society.
“While we take pride in memorising the Qur’an, we do not always follow its teachings. If we truly lived by its guidance, there would be less conflict and division among us,” he said.
He added that practicing the values of the Qur’an could help address persistent clan conflicts in North Eastern Kenya, urging communities to embrace its message of justice, unity, and compassion.
Speaking to parents, religious leaders, and students, Noordin also warned against corruption and incitement, noting that some individuals pursue wealth without regard to its source and, instead of promoting peace and harmonious coexistence, fuel tensions within communities.
Ibn Abbas Madrasa, located in Masalani town in Ijara Constituency, was founded by Noordin’s late father, Mohamed Yusuf Haji, the former Garissa Senator who passed away on February 15, 2021.
The madrasa began in 2007 with just 30 learners and has since expanded to nine branches across the constituency. To date, more than 800 students have graduated from the institution.
The ceremony was marked by reflection and tributes to the late senator’s enduring legacy in promoting religious education. The Director General pledged that his family would continue supporting the madrasa’s programmes in honour of his father’s vision.
