Lamu Governor pledges tough crackdown on drug trafficking
Drug abuse continues to pose a serious social and economic challenge in Lamu, particularly among the youth

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has pledged to intensify efforts to crack down on drug abuse and trafficking in the county.
He said the county government will work closely with security agencies and other stakeholders committed to eliminating narcotics from the region.
The governor emphasized the need for sustained collaboration among security agencies, religious leaders, and local communities to protect young people from the dangers of drug abuse and ensure Lamu remains free from narcotics.
Governor Timamy noted that drug abuse continues to pose a serious social and economic challenge in Lamu, particularly among the youth, and called for consistent enforcement measures alongside community support initiatives.
The governor spoke during a recent event held to reward police officers for their role in a successful anti-narcotics operation on Lamu Island.

The two officers, who each received Sh50,000, participated in an operation that led to the arrest of two suspected major drug traffickers operating within Lamu Island.
“This is not just about arresting suspects; it is about protecting the future of our youth,” he said, adding that the reward system is intended to motivate officers involved in the ongoing crackdown on drugs.
Timamy hosted the officers alongside religious leaders at the county headquarters in Mokowe. Religious leaders have increasingly taken part in awareness campaigns aimed at combating drug abuse in the county.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Mbarak Bahjaj reaffirmed the county administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement efforts and strengthening preventive campaigns against drug trafficking.
He said the administration is also investing in community sensitisation programmes aimed at discouraging drug use among young people.
Drug abuse has become a deep-rooted problem among Lamu’s youth and has been blamed for the rising cases of machete attacks and other crimes on Lamu Island and other areas in the county.
