KDF holds inaugural Qura’n memorization and recitation contest

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) held its first annual Quran Recitation Competition for Muslim service members, in a move aimed at promoting spiritual excellence and cohesion within the ranks.

The competition held last week at the held at the Kabete Forces Research and Referral Hospital Mosque featured multiple stages and categories for both officers and service members from across various KDF formations and units.

Organized by the Defence Headquarters Muslim Sub-Branch, the event reaffirmed the integral role of faith in shaping discipline and resilience among military personnel.

The event also reflected the KDF’s continued commitment to fostering inclusivity and supporting the religious needs of all service members.

The competition forms part of Kenya’s preparations for the 11th International Military Competition for the Memorization of the Holy Quran, scheduled to take place next year in the Saudi Arabia. In addition to promoting spiritual growth, the event served as a platform for identifying participants who will represent the KDF at the international competition, which brings together military personnel from around the world to demonstrate excellence in Quran memorization and recitation.

Speaking during the event, the Acting Chief Kadhi, Sheikh Sukyan Hassan Omar, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, commended the KDF for championing institutional inclusivity and encouraging the spiritual advancement of its personnel. He noted that the teachings of the Holy Quran instill virtues such as discipline, patience, integrity, humility, and commitment to duty — values that closely align with the principles of military service and effective leadership.

He further emphasized that strong moral grounding and spiritual awareness are essential attributes for service members entrusted with safeguarding national security and serving the country with honour.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders in the KDF, Brigadier Ismail Awle, described the initiative as an important step toward strengthening faith, unity, and discipline among Muslim personnel. He encouraged participants to remain steadfast in their devotion and to embody the teachings and values of the Quran both in their professional duties and daily lives.

The KDF Principal Imam, Colonel Abdulmalik Rubeya, praised the Defence Forces leadership for its unwavering support of religious and spiritual programs within the military. He observed that such initiatives play a critical role in character formation, promoting mutual respect, and enhancing cohesion among personnel from diverse backgrounds and beliefs.

The competition featured five categories of Quran memorization and recitation—30 Juz’, 20 Juz’, 10 Juz’, 5 Juz’, and 3 Juz’. Outstanding performers were recognized for their excellence, with the top candidates expected to carry the KDF flag in the forthcoming international contest.
