The Jamia Mosque Open Day event scheduled for tomorrow, October 18, has been postponed to Saturday, November 1.

The event was postponed due to the prevailing somber situation in the country, a mourning period following the death of the former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday while receiving treatment in India.

“Kindly note that our annual Open Day event scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed to 1st November,” said a brief note from the mosque.

Following the death of the former prime minister, Jamia Mosque issued a message of condolence, lauding Raila for his respect for Kenya’s religious diversity and commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens..

“He was a champion of the marginalized and minority communities, consistently advocating for fairness, inclusion, and reforms that strengthened Kenya’s governance and unity,” the mosque said in a statement.

The Open Day programme is among the main calendar events for Jamia mosque and aims at fostering interfaith cohesion and understanding.

In past events, hundreds of non-Muslims, including members of the Christian clergy, have visited the mosque, where they gain a firsthand experience of Islamic beliefs and practices.

Among the highlights of the open day are a guided tour of the mosque, a question and answer session with Islamic scholars, and being given an opportunity to observe the Salah, the Islamic prayers.

Since 2018, the mosque has organized the event aimed at educating non-Muslims about Islam as well as serving as a platform to demystify the many misconceptions about Islam and Muslims.

This year’s event will be held under the theme “A century of peaceful co-existence,” and it will be part of a series of activities commemorating the 100 years' journey of Jamia mosque, which started off from a humble beginning as a mabati (corrugated structure) to one of the leading Muslim institutions in East and Central Africa.
