The Jamia Mosque Committee, Nairobi, has launched an appeal for its annual Ramadhan Iftar programme, aimed at providing much-needed relief to vulnerable households during the upcoming holy month of Ramadhan.

The Committee has called upon Muslims of goodwill to support the initiative, which seeks to ease the burden faced by struggling families during the month of fasting. As part of the mosque’s ongoing social welfare programmes, the initiative involves the distribution of dry food packages valued at Sh6,000 per household. These supplies are intended to support beneficiary families throughout the month-long fasting period, ensuring they have sufficient food to prepare their iftar meals—the evening meal that breaks the fast.

Speaking during Friday prayers at the mosque, Jamia Mosque Executive Officer Said Abdallah made a heartfelt appeal for support. “We humbly appeal for your support. Any amount donated will be highly appreciated and will go a long way in bringing relief to families in need,” he said.

With the country currently experiencing a severe drought, the Executive Officer urged community members to come together in solidarity. “This Ramadhan, let us feed those who are fasting and ensure that no one goes hungry at the time of iftar,” he said. “Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break their fast will receive a reward equal to that of the fasting person, without diminishing their reward in any way,” he added, citing a well-known saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to emphasize the spiritual significance of charity.

Now in its sixth year, the dry food distribution programme has benefited thousands of families in Nairobi and other parts of the country. Last year, the Committee—through the support of individuals, business people, corporate organizations, and other well-wishers—distributed foodstuffs worth more than Sh10 million.

To ensure transparency and fairness, beneficiaries are identified through a collaborative effort involving Imams, mosque committees, community workers, and Muslim organizations working with vulnerable populations. Priority is given to widows, the elderly, persons living with disabilities, families facing extreme financial hardship, and other economically disadvantaged groups.

The annual programme stands as a testament to the power of collective community action. The Jamia Mosque Committee invites community members, businesses, and organizations to join hands in this noble initiative to support those in need and make a lasting impact on their lives.

Donations towards this cause can be made through the Jamia Mosque Paybill number, 150770, Account Iftar.
