Muslim inmates have been encouraged to use their time in custody to deepen their understanding of their faith, a move that can potentially transform them into better individuals and more productive citizens.

The advice was given by Sheikh Ali Muhsin Shekuwe, the Deputy Imam of Pumwani Riyadha Mosque, who emphasized the role of religion in transforming lives, describing it as a powerful tool for rehabilitation.

Sheikh Shekuwe made the remarks during a graduation ceremony held on Tuesday, December 23, at the Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi, where more than 70 inmates graduated after completing a one-year course in Islamic studies.

The Islamic studies programme is aimed at equipping inmates with religious knowledge to help them practice their faith as part of the prison’s broader rehabilitation efforts.

Praising the graduates for their commitment and dedication, Sheikh Shekuwe said their pursuit of religious knowledge would bring them closer to Allah and help shape them into responsible citizens.

“Use your time to learn your faith, as it will bring you closer to Allah and positively transform your lives,” he said.
“I urge you to use this newfound knowledge to seek forgiveness from Allah and reflect on how you can rebuild your lives,” he added.

He also commended the prison administration for supporting the initiative, noting that such cooperation plays a vital role in helping inmates remain connected to their faith.

“This support is essential as it enables the inmates to deepen their understanding of Islam and contributes significantly to their rehabilitation,” he said.

Sheikh Shekuwe further pledged that Pumwani Riyadha Mosque would explore areas of cooperation with the Prisons Department to enhance the spiritual welfare of Muslim inmates.

The graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone in the correctional facility’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate inmates through education and spiritual growth, reinforcing its commitment to reform and reintegration.

During the event, Pumwani Riyadha Mosque, in collaboration with Al-Hikma Da‘awa Organization, donated foodstuffs and other essential items to inmates at the facility. Mosque officials also prepared meals for more than 900 inmates at the remand prison.

Additionally, the mosque donated a television set to the prison mosque to help inmates stay informed about current affairs while also supporting their spiritual development.
