Imam Development program- Transforming Imams into community leaders
The program empowers Imams through a comprehensive support program that includes monthly training, mentorship, stipends, educational resources, and leadership development

In many underserved communities across Africa, the local Imam is more than a prayer leader. He is a teacher, counsellor, mediator, and often the first point of support in times of crisis. Yet for years, many Imams have worked under immense pressure with limited resources—until the rise of the Imam Development Program began to change that reality.
Founded in 2014 in South Africa, the program was built on a simple but powerful idea: empower the Imam, and you empower the entire community. Over a decade later, that vision is reshaping lives across the continent.
The program is dedicated to empower Imams to uplift their communities through a comprehensive support program that includes monthly training, mentorship, stipends, educational resources, and leadership development.
.At the heart of this support is a monthly stipend of $108 to Imams and Muallimahs across 14 African countries —a lifeline that transforms lives and communities. The stipend empowers them to serve their communities with their full attention and energy, rather than struggling to survive.
The programme empower Imams to become effective community leaders through an exceptional support program thereby uplifting their communities and fostering positive change.
Over the past decade, the Imam Development programme has supported more than 700 Imams in countries which include South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, and Mozambique among others.
For many Imams, financial hardship once overshadowed their ability to serve effectively. The program introduced monthly stipends, emergency relief funds, and economic empowerment initiatives—giving Imams the stability to focus on their mission.
Today, hundreds of Imams no longer have to choose between supporting their families and serving their congregations. Instead, they are equipped to do both with dignity.
Beyond financial aid, the program provides structured training in leadership, counselling, entrepreneurship, and even technology.
Imams are taught how to manage community projects, resolve conflicts, and adapt to modern challenges. Through mentorship and regular workshops, they evolve from traditional religious figures into well-rounded community leaders. Short courses are also provided in leadership, financial management, communication and community development
The results are tangible. Communities have gained access to clean water through borehole projects, children attend better-supported madrasahs, and thousands of families receive food during key seasons. In some cases, simple interventions—like providing a motorcycle—have dramatically increased an Imam’s ability to serve remote areas.
A unique feature of the program is its integration of technology. Imams are connected through digital platforms that allow real-time communication, reporting, and donor engagement.
This system has effectively created a network of connected community leaders, bridging the gap between rural areas and global supporters.
What began in South Africa has now expanded to over a dozen countries, supporting more than 700 Imams and impacting millions annually.
The ripple effect is profound: every empowered Imam influences families, youth, and entire neighborhoods—creating cycles of education, stability, and hope.
For many communities, the transformation is already clear. Where there was once limitation, there is now leadership. Where there was struggle, there is now sustainability.
And at the center of it all stands a newly empowered Imam—guiding not just prayers, but progress.
The program is currently open to any legally employed Imam. Applications can be made through the following link https://portal.imamdp.org/
