The Jamia Mosque Secretary General, Abdul Bari Hamid said his recognition among the country’s heroes was an appreciation of the efforts of the mosque committee and its staff to work for the betterment of the community.

Abdul Bari was among 184 distinguished personalities celebrated during this year’s Mashujaa Day festivities held on October 20 at Ithookwe Stadium, Kitui County, an event presided over by President William Ruto. The heroes were honoured for their exceptional contributions to national development, humanitarian work and community empowerment.

The Jamia secretary general received recognition in the Philanthropy category for his outstanding contribution to community service, humanitarian work, and exemplary leadership in advancing Jamia Mosque’s mission of service to society.

The National Heroes Council applauded Abdulbari for his unwavering commitment to public service and philanthropy. "As the Secretary-General of Jamia Mosque Nairobi, Mr Hamid has spearheaded numerous humanitarian projects - from providing housing for displaced families and donating wheelchairs to persons with disabilities, to distributing food and medical aid to vulnerable communities," the Council noted.

The award was formally presented on October 28 at Jamia Mosque by Charles O. Wambia, Chief Executive Officer of the National Heroes Council.

Dedicating the award to the committee and staff, Abdulbary emphasized that the achievement reflected the collective effort and unwavering commitment of the entire Jamia fraternity to serve humanity through da’wah, education, health, and social welfare.

“This award is not about me alone—it belongs to every member of the Jamia Mosque Committee and staff who work tirelessly to keep our institution at the forefront of community service. I dedicate it to them and to all who continue to support Jamia’s noble initiatives,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr. Wambia commended the Secretary General for his exemplary leadership and dedication to community development, describing him as a role model in faith-based philanthropy. “The National Heroes Council is proud to recognize your efforts, which embody the spirit of Mashujaa Day—service, sacrifice, and selflessness to the Muslim community,” said Mr. Wambia.

Speaking at the same event, Sheikh Osman Muhammad Warfa, Chairman of the Jamia Mosque Committee, expressed gratitude to the government for acknowledging the vital role of faith-based institutions in national development. He thanked the Council for the honor and reaffirmed Jamia Mosque’s commitment to promoting unity, education, and community welfare.

This recognition comes as Jamia Mosque Nairobi marks 100 years since its establishment—a century distinguished by spiritual guidance, educational initiatives, social support, and national contribution.

The National Heroes Council is mandated to identify, select, and honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Kenya’s development and heritage.
