Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced new healthcare tariffs under the Social Health Authority (SHA), introducing free services for registered beneficiaries and expanded coverage for chronic illnesses and cancer treatment.

Under the new reforms, all registered SHA beneficiaries will access free maternity services at Level 2 and Level 3 primary healthcare facilities on a walk-in, walk-out basis. The services, financed through the Primary Healthcare Fund, cover both normal deliveries and caesarean sections, alongside essential newborn care.

The maternity package also includes assisted deliveries, postnatal care for mothers and newborns, newborn immunization, laboratory tests, medication, blood transfusions, oxygen supplies, and postnatal family planning services, among other services outlined in Ministry of Health guidelines.

“Under the enhanced package, all registered SHA beneficiaries will now access free maternity services at Level 2 and Level 3 primary healthcare facilities on a walk-in, walk-out basis,” Duale said.

“The cover includes both normal deliveries and caesarean sections, fully financed through the Primary Healthcare Fund, easing the burden on expectant mothers and advancing safe motherhood across the country,” he added.

In addition, the government has significantly increased coverage for chronic illnesses under the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund from Sh150,000 to Sh400,000. The annual Cancer Benefits Package has also been raised from Sh550,000 to Sh800,000 to improve access to treatment and care.

The revised package introduces enhanced cancer treatment benefits, including oncology consultations covered up to Sh2,500, chemotherapy administration at Sh5,500, and radiotherapy at Sh3,600 per session for up to 30 sessions.

Coverage for advanced diagnostic services has also been expanded, with CT scans set at Sh6,900, MRI scans at Sh11,000, PET scans at Sh53,500, and PSMA PET scans at Sh64,200. Brachytherapy will cost Sh40,000 for three sessions, while SBRT/SBRS treatment is capped at Sh70,000 for five sessions.

Supportive care medication will be covered up to Sh10,000, while remission follow-up care will be provided in line with the Kenya Cancer National Treatment Protocols.

To strengthen support for patients with sickle cell disease, SHA will also cover services such as apheresis platelets at Sh20,000 and red cell exchange at Sh70,000, each available up to three times during a policy period.
