Garissa County has honored the late Mzee Dubat Ali Amey, a prominent elder and advocate for marginalized communities, by renaming a road in his memory.

The Bulla Mzuri–Kunaso Road in Garissa has been officially renamed Dubat Ali Amey Road.

The respected community leader, peacemaker, and vocal advocate for marginalized communities passed away in Nairobi on Saturday, April 11, 2026, after a long illness. He was buried in Nairobi the following day.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, along with Senator Abdul Haji and Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane, led the ceremony to unveil the road signage, commemorating the life of the respected leader and recognizing his decades of service to Northern Kenya.

Known as a champion of pastoralist interests, Mzee Dubat was until his death the chairman of the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council where he was known for his strong leadership in addressing regional issues, including advocating for better livestock marketing and farmer support.

For over four decades, he played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of marginalized and pastoralist communities, while tirelessly promoting peace and harmony across Northern Kenya.

He is remembered for advocating for compensation meted by past governments including the Garissa and the Wajir Massacre which happened during the administration of former president Daniel Arap Moi.

Mzee Dubat also contributed to Kenya’s constitutional review process, taking part in discussions on human rights, justice, and reconciliation. His involvement placed him among the leaders who helped shape national conversations on governance and equality.

He remained a consistent advocate for human rights, justice, and community cohesion, playing a key role in promoting peace, security, and development in the North Eastern region.

Political leaders, led by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, described the late Mzee Dubat as a steadfast defender of social justice and a respected voice of wisdom and reason in the community.

Mourning Sheikh Dubat, Duale described him as an elder and peacemaker who played a key role in guiding the community and was known as a strong advocate for justice and fairness and bringing people together during difficult times.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama described Mzee Dubat as a leader who served the county with commitment, from his early years in government service to his later leadership roles. He said the county had lost a leader whose absence would be felt across the community.

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan said Dubat used his voice to highlight the challenges facing people in Northern Kenya and remained committed to issues of justice and equal treatment. He added that Dubat contributed to civil rights discussions and stood with communities facing hardship.
