The Garissa airstrip is undergoing a major upgrade that will allow the facility to accommodate large aircraft, easing the transportation of people, goods, and services.

The national government has allocated Sh700 million for the modernization of the airstrip, with the County Government of Garissa contributing Sh110 million to the project.
The upgraded airstrip is expected to transform transportation, unlock new economic opportunities, facilitate trade and investment, and provide faster and more efficient transportation of goods and services.
The project is being carried out in three phases, with the first phase, implemented by the Ministry of Defence, entailing the construction of a perimeter wall around the facility.

The second phase is being implemented by the County Government of Garissa and involves putting up a modern terminal building with amenities that include an arrival hall, a check-in waiting bay, a VIP lounge, prayer and wudhu areas, shops, and expanded parking facilities.
Phase Three involves the expansion of the current 1.2-kilometer runway, which was constructed in 1984, to a 1.5 km taxiway and apron rehabilitation.
“The works are expected to be completed by April to allow the airstrip to accommodate larger aircraft and support daily flights to Nairobi,” said Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary for Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
“This development aligns with other flagship projects in Garissa, including the Affordable Housing Programme and the Mikono Modern Market. Together, they are reshaping Garissa's urban landscape, creating jobs and driving inclusive local economic growth,” he added.
The PS said through integrating modern transport, residential and commercial infrastructure, Garissa is steadily positioning itself as a competitive regional frontier, with improved connectivity, better livelihoods, and expanded economic potential.
This airstrip upgrade aligns with the government's broader plan to boost economic activity in North Eastern Kenya by enhancing infrastructure, promoting inclusivity, and driving economic growth.
