A fundraising drive has been launched for the construction of the Lang’ata Mosque Project, a landmark initiative envisioned as a comprehensive Islamic Centre to address the community’s spiritual, social, and educational needs.

The project is being spearheaded by the Lang’ata Islamic Welfare Organisation (LIWO), which plans to establish a state-of-the-art Islamic Centre alongside a rental apartment complex. The ambitious development is estimated to cost over Sh 500 million.

At the weekend, representatives from various mosques and organisations convened at Arabian Cuisine in Nairobi to deliberate on the roadmap for the proposed Lang’ata Mosque. The meeting brought together community leaders, da’wah ambassadors, and key stakeholders, who focused on mobilising support and laying the groundwork for structured fundraising efforts.

During the meeting, a fundraising committee chaired by Abdallah Ndope was appointed to spearhead the initiative. Members also discussed critical issues related to community engagement, project planning, and long-term sustainability.

Participants committed to raising Sh 578 million, the projected budget for the full development. The plan includes the construction of a modern mosque, a fully equipped madrasa, an integrated Islamic school, a revert support centre, a female hostel, and a 12-storey apartment block comprising three-bedroom units. The apartment complex will operate as a waqf (charitable endowment) to ensure the mosque’s financial sustainability.

The new mosque will accommodate more than 1,000 worshippers, both men and women. The current facility, with a capacity of around 100 worshippers, has become inadequate due to the growing Muslim population in the wider Lang’ata area.

Once completed, the mosque will serve residents from Southlands, Ngei 1 and Ngei 2, Akiba, Onyonka, Otiende, Jambo, Rubia, Customs, Masai, Civil Servants, Uhuru Gardens, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The mosque’s origins date back to 1984, when a garage in a government estate was converted into a madrasa and prayer space. In 1998, land was acquired and construction of the current mosque began, transforming the madrasa into a community centre serving the growing Muslim population.

The project was championed by the late Ahmed Abdallah, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, and the late businessman Abdulrahman Abbas, who served as patrons of the Lang’ata Islamic Welfare Organisation.
