Catholic Church in Kisumu pledges to address Hijab concerns in Schools
The Church affirmed its commitment to religious tolerance and pledged to respect Ministry of Education directives regarding the wearing of hijabs in schools

The Catholic Justice and Social Department (CJSD) in Kisumu has committed to addressing complaints surrounding the wearing of hijabs in Catholic-sponsored schools.
The pledge was among several resolutions reached during a meeting between Catholic clerics and representatives of the Muslim Education Council (MEC) held on Monday, February 16, 2026, in Kisumu.
Describing the outcome as a positive step toward a lasting solution, MEC representative for Siaya County, Safia Okoth Raila, said church officials requested 10 days to investigate the matter adding that the Church affirmed its commitment to religious tolerance and pledged to respect Ministry of Education directives regarding the wearing of hijabs in schools.
“They asked to be given 10 days to investigate the matter, and a progress report will be presented during a subsequent meeting bringing together the Catholic Justice and Social Department, the Muslim Education Council, and the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK),” she said.
With the holy month of Ramadhan approaching, Safia further noted that the Church pledged to support Ramadhan programmes in Catholic-sponsored schools within the Kisumu Archdiocese. Arrangements will be made to facilitate iftar (breaking the fast) and suhoor (pre-dawn) meals, as well as provide space for prayers, to ensure Muslim students observe the month without difficulty.
“This is a positive step which we greatly appreciate. During the next meeting, we expect broader representation from Muslim leadership to deepen discussions on improving the welfare of Muslim students in Catholic-sponsored schools and expanding cooperation on interfaith matters,” Safia added.
The meeting was prompted by concerns raised by a parent at Lwak Girls Secondary School in Siaya County, who withdrew his daughter from the institution following alleged harassment over her wearing of the hijab.
The Catholic Justice and Social Department, part of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), is tasked with grassroots advocacy, dialogue, and civic education aimed at addressing social injustices and promoting inclusive engagement.
