The Association of Muslim University and College Students (AMUCK) has disbursed more than Sh3.1 million in bursary support over the past two years through its Students’ Kitty welfare programme, helping financially disadvantaged Muslim students pursue and complete their higher education.

Since the programme's inception in 2024, the Students’ Kitty initiative has become a lifeline for many students facing financial hardship. This year alone, the programme has supported 33 students drawn from 15 universities and colleges across the country.

The welfare programme is dedicated to assisting financially challenged Muslim students enrolled in institutions of higher learning, enabling them to continue their studies without interruption.

According to AMUCK Chairman, Mohamed Abdulqadir, the Students’ Kitty is sustained through donations, fundraising initiatives, and contributions from individuals and organizations committed to investing in the future of the Muslim community.

He noted that the programme was established after the association identified a growing number of students who were being forced to defer their studies due to unpaid fees. Others were unable to sit for examinations, while some resorted to interest-based loans to finance their education.

“We realized that many bright and promising students were at risk of abandoning their academic dreams because of financial constraints. The Students’ Kitty was created to provide a sustainable solution and ensure that deserving students can continue their education with dignity,” said Mohamed.

He added that fundraising drives conducted during the holy month of Ramadhan have remained the programme’s primary source of funding and have played a significant role in supporting students to complete their studies.

“The fundraising programme held during Ramadhan has been instrumental in sustaining the Kitty. Its impact has been long-lasting, enabling many beneficiaries to stay in school and successfully progress in their academic journeys,” he said.

Despite these achievements, the chairman acknowledged that the demand for financial assistance continues to far exceed the available resources.

“While we managed to support 33 students this year, we currently have more than 150 pending applications. This clearly demonstrates the magnitude of the financial challenges facing students and the urgent need for additional support,” he noted.

The chairman also expressed appreciation to corporate partners that have supported the initiative, including SIB Investment Bank, which recently joined efforts to strengthen the Students’ Kitty Programme.

“We are empowering students who are marginalized and have limited alternatives for financing their education. By supporting this programme, stakeholders help expand access to education, nurture future leaders, and create sustainable positive impact within our communities,” he said.

AMUCK has appealed to well-wishers, corporate organizations, development partners, and members of the public to support the welfare fund and help more students access higher education opportunities.

Contributions to the Students’ Kitty Programme can be made through Pay Bill Number 4123109, Account Name: Fees.

Founded in 2021, AMUCK serves as an umbrella body that brings together Muslim student associations from universities and colleges across the country. The association was established to foster collaboration among Muslim student communities and address challenges affecting Muslim students in institutions of higher learning.

Today, AMUCK comprises more than 40 Muslim student associations and works to create a supportive and inclusive environment for Muslim students nationwide.

Among its key initiatives arethe annual Daawah Conference, leadership development programmes, coordination of inter-campus student relations, advocacy for students’ rights and welfare, and the promotion of positive engagement between Muslim students and wider society.
