Former Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Adan Abdullah Mohamed has been sworn in as the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

He took the oath of office on Wednesday at the Supreme Court of Kenya following his appointment on May 18 by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.

According to the Gazette notice, Adan is expected to serve a three-year term. “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 11(1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury appoints Adan Abdulla Mohamed to be the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority for a period of three (3) years, with effect from May 18, 2026,” the notice reads.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new KRA boss was presided over by Judiciary Registrar Winfridah Mokaya.

Adan takes over from Humphrey Wattanga, who previously headed the authority before his exit in April this year.

In a statement, KRA Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi said Adan was appointed after a rigorous recruitment process. He expressed confidence that Adan’s more than three decades of leadership experience in finance, management consulting, public service, and corporate governance would be a valuable asset to the authority.

“The Board has pledged its full support to the incoming Commissioner General and called on staff, taxpayers, and stakeholders to accord him the cooperation needed to deliver on KRA’s mandate of mobilising revenue for national development,” he said.

Adan, who previously served as the Chief of Strategy Execution in the Executive Office of the President, is among the few senior officials to have held key national roles across two administrations.

In 2013, he was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta as Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization and Trade, where he spearheaded industrialization and enterprise development initiatives aimed at boosting manufacturing and investment.

He was later appointed to the East African Community and Regional Development docket, where he oversaw Kenya’s regional trade policies and managed the country’s economic integration agenda.

In 2023, he was appointed by President William Ruto to serve on the Council of Economic Advisors
